History of Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church

Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church was established in 1868 in Opelika, Alabama, during a pivotal time in American history shortly after the Emancipation Proclamation. Newly freed African Americans sought spaces where they could worship freely, build community, and express their faith without restriction. Out of that season of transition and hope, Bethesda was born as a spiritual refuge and symbol of independence, resilience, and devotion to God.

Pastoral Leadership of Rev. Anthony Pogue

On May 18, 2016, Rev. Anthony Pogue was selected as Pastor of Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church. He preached his first sermon shortly thereafter and was officially installed later that year. Since answering God’s call to lead, Pastor Pogue has guided Bethesda with a kingdom-focused vision rooted in outreach, growth, and spiritual development. Under his leadership, the church has strengthened ministries, expanded community engagement, enhanced worship experiences, and improved facilities to better serve its members.
